It's a fact: You have a 1 in 30 chance of having to deal
with a life threatening fire this year. At home or at work,
fire safety should be a way of life.
North American provides fire alarm services for your home
or business.
For your home, smoke and heat detectors are strategically
placed outside sleeping areas, and in other locations in
your home. Heat detectors provide supplementary coverage
such as in garages or kitchen areas, where smoke detectors
would not function reliably.
The fire alarm always provides a loud audible alarm when
fire is detected, giving you the time you need to escape.
Central station monitoring alerts firefighters. For the
hearing impaired, strobe lights are installed to provide a
visual alarm.
These detectors are powered from a central control panel
which is equipped with backup power, so your system will
continue to function properly in an electric failure.
FAQ: In San Francisco, residences are required by code to
install smoke detectors directly wired to a lighting
circuit. These "hard wired" smoke detectors provide good
basic coverage, but no monitoring capability and often no
backup power. North American's detectors are powered
from the master control, which provides central station
monitoring, standby power, loud alarm sound, and strobes,
if needed. Does this mean I might need 2 smoke detectors
outside the sleeping area? Yes, it does.
For your business, fire alarm requirements are often
mandated by the local fire authorities. We work with
these authorities to fulfill your requirements.
Fire Safety Information
For your Safety: Consider the alarm as part of a
comprehensive fire safety plan. When your fire alarm
system has been installed, consider:
Battery operated smoke detectors as a supplement. Here in
earthquake country, electricity can be off for extended
periods following a shake, even a minor one. Battery
operated detectors work for a year on a single battery.
Fire extinguishers for home, business, boat, R.V., etc.
Learn to use them effectively, and purchase the largest
ones the weakest member of your household can comfortably
handle.
Suggested Locations for extinguishers: Near the kitchen
(NOT next to the stove, which will probably be in flames
when you need your extinguisher), in garages and
basements, in each bedroom (this room is, after all, where
you will probably be when a fire breaks out!). Vehicles
should have fire extinguishers as well.
Emergency Training. The San Francisco Fire Department
offers an excellent course called the Neighborhood
Emergency Response Team training. It focuses on response
to earthquakes, and a main part of that is response to
fires. It's also absolutely free. Call them at

DETECT CARBON MONOXIDE. Carbon Monoxide(CO)is a colorless,
odorless and tasteless gas that can kill within minutes,
given a high enough exposure. Automobiles emit the gas,
as does your furnace and water heater. Most of the time
the gas is exhausted through the vents on the equipment.
If something goes wrong with the vents you can be exposed.
North American sells, installs, monitors and maintains
carbon monoxide detection devices.
At the very least, purchase and install one of the retail
CO detectors, available at many stores.
DETECT GAS LEAKS. A leak of combustable gas can cause a tragedy.
Eliminate Clutter. Combustible material in a basement,
closet or garage is simply fuel for a fire just waiting
for a spark. Get rid of it.
Be safe with combustible liquids. Gasoline, thinners and
other combustible liquids are dangerous and must be stored
safely. Advice: Enclosed metal cabinets, away from
furnace, water heater and other ignition sources for those
you need to keep handy. To the hazardous waste dump for
those you don't need.
Exit Drills in the Home. E.D.I.T.H. A program promulgated
by the National Fire Protection Association. Practice
two ways out of each room. Teach children to get out, and
stay out of the house if there is a fire. Meet at a
designated location outside the home.
Stop, Drop and Roll - Learn, and teach to your children:
If your clothing catches fire, DON'T RUN - it only fans
the fire. STOP, DROP to the ground, and roll around,
smothering the fire. You might also want to yell for
someone to bring a bucket of water on the double!
Fire Sprinklers in the Home
Equipping your home with a fire sprinkler system enables a home to fight it's own
fires, and is rapidly gaining popularity. Home sprinklers look good - forget the
idea of ugly black piping everywhere, and are reliable. They work and work well at
protecting lives and property. They're also free! Actually, better than free,
they pay you with insurance discounts. We know of one residential installation
with a monitored sprinkler system, fire alarm and security system. Their insurance
premium is $3000.00 per year with over $2000.00 in credits for the protective system.
This saves over 2/3!
